Vogliamo informare tutti gli utenti che l’applicazione ALive e’ stata tolta dall’AppStore (e dal sito) in data odierna.
Non sara’ piu’ mantenuta e non sono previsti ulteriori aggiornamenti, anche se non escludiamo di poter tornare al suo sviluppo in un prossimo futuro.
L’applicazione continuera’ ad essere completamente funzionante fino alla fine del campionato di serie A attualmente in corso.

Ringraziamo sentitamente tutti coloro che ci hanno supportato con feedback e suggerimenti.

We would like to inform you all that the application ALive has been taken off from the AppStore (and from this site) today.
We’re not going to mantain the app nor post further updates and upgrades, even if we do not exclude the possibility to get hands on it in a future.
The application will continue its job in full until the end of the Italian Serie A championship.

Cercando di seguire i consigli degli utenti che hanno recensito l’applicazione, ho aggiunto la possibilità di creare delle cartelle dove tenere e ordinare le foto.

Al momento dell’aggiornamento verra’ creata una cartella di default (che non sara eliminabile) dove saranno spostate tutte le foto presenti; sara’ premura del’utente, poi, decidere come organizzare le immagini creando altre cartelle e/o spostando le foto a proprio piacimento.

Questa suddivisione sarà rispecchiata anche nell’interfaccia web, e proprio sull’interfaccia web si sta concentrando il lavoro di questi giorni, postero’ quindi qualche screenshots a breve.

Ho aggiunto un controllo nel pannello delle opzioni per scegliere il livello di compressione dell’immagine (da 0 a 10, dove “0″ sta per la qualita’ più bassa e quindi la compressione più alta).

E vorrei qualche feedback da parte degli utenti riguardo la qualita’ delle immagini importate, dal momento che un paio di utenti si sono lamentati per la ridotta qualita’ delle immagini: il codice non riduce la qualita’, ianche confrontando la stessa immagine  scaricata dall’iPhone tramite “la procedura standard” (dopo essere stata importata nell’applicazione) con quella originale, non ho riscontrato perdita di qualita’.

Che gli utenti si riferiscano alla qualita’ delle immagini quando vengono guardate nel visualizzatore interno?
Puo’ essere plausibile, poiche’ per evitare crash e rallentamenti mi sono tenuto basso con la qualita’ (questo non influisce sulla immagine “reale”, e’ solo una “preview”), sto comunque facendo diversi test per trovare un compromesso accettabile tra stabilita’ e qualita’ . Qualcuno ha voglia di riportare le proprie impressioni?

Ho inoltre aggiunto la possibilita’ di inviare una o piu immagini via email, anche se quando le immagini sono troppe (per un totale di 4/5 Mb) l’iPhone non ce la fa.. sto ultimando i test e cerchero’ di fornire informazioni piu’ precise al momento del rilascio dell’upgrade.

Comunque, per sicurezza, il tasto “Allega” riporta i megabytes totali da allegare, in modo da potercisi regolare:

Probabilmente non ce la faro’ per la versione 1.1, ma aggiungero’ la possibilita’ di importare i video (e quindi condividerli tramite l’interfaccia web); ci vorra’ un pochino dal momento che per sviluppare questa nuova feature ho bisogno di un iPhone 3Gs dal momento che il 3G non la supporta.
Sebbene il nuovo device sia in arrivo per la prossima settimana vorrei prendermi un po’ di tempo per fare le cose per bene =)

Ultima cosa, ma non per importanza: alcuni utenti hanno richiesto la possibilita’ di uploadare le immagini direttamente dall’interfaccia web, anche questa aggiunta è in via di sviluppo – spero di riuscire ad inserirla nella  versione 1.1 – e, anche se sara’ di una semplicita’ estrema, non usera’ WebDAV per il momento.

UPDATE: arrivato l’iPhone 3Gs ho fatto un po’ di controlli ed ho capito a cosa vi riferite: io ho sviluppato su un 3G e le foto scattate con un iPhone 3G hanno una risoluzione di 1200×1600, quelle scattate con l’iPhone 3Gs invece sono 1536×2048. Premesso che, dal punto vista del codice, l’immagine importata e’ ruotata di 90 gradi, al momento della rotazione assumevo che la risoluzione fosse 1200×1600 e questo spiega la perdita di qualita. Nella prossima versione sara tutto apposto =)

Trying to follow the advice of some users who have reviewed the application, I added the ability to create  new custom folders where you keep and sort your photos.
At the time of the upgrade will be created a default folder, then everyone will have the possibility to decide where to organize photos, create additional folders and move pictures.
This division is also reflected in the web interface, and just on the web interface is focusing the work of these days, I’ll post few screenshots soon.

I added a check in the options panel to choose the compression level of the imported images (0 to 10, where “0″ stands for the lower quality and, therefore, higher compression).
And I would like some feedback from users about the quality of images, a couple of users complain about the reduced quality. Actually the code does not reduce the quality, also I’ve been comparing the same image (downloaded from the iPhone via “standard procedure” after been importing in the application) to the original one and I have not seen loss of quality.

Maybe users refer to the quality in the internal viewer? I can admit this, because – to avoid crashes and slowdowns – I chose a low quality level for these images (this does not affect the “real” image that’s only a “preview”), and I’m still doing tests to find an acceptable compromise between stability and quality.

Someone is willing to post impressions?

Moreover, added the ability to send one or more pictures by email, though when the images are too many (a total of 4 /5 MB) the iPhone cannot stand it.. I’m finishing some tests and will try to provide more accurate information when issuing the upgrade.
However, for security matters, the “Attach” button shows the total megabytes to be attached, so you can adjust:

Probably I won’t giving it for 1.1, but I’m adding the ability to import videos (and then share them via web interface), it will take a while to develop this thing because I need an iPhone 3Gs since the 3G doesn’t support videos; in a week I’ll be able to have the new device but I would take a little more time to do things the right way =)

Last but not least: some users have requested the opportunity to upload images directly from the web, this addition is in development – I hope to install  in 1.1 – although it will be kept simple and easy  and WebDAV won’t be in use currently.

UPDATE: the iPhone 3Gs has arrived, I’ve been testing some controls and understood the problem some were complain: I’ve been developing the application on a 3G device, and picture resolution is 1200×1600 while the ones taken with 3Gs is 1536×2048. By the part of the code, the imported image is 90 degrees turned and at the moment of the image rotation I was assuming the actual resolution was 1200×1600, that explains the loss of quality. In the next issue all will be fixed.

Una nuova applicazione, una cosa un po’ da nerd devo dire e per le specifiche rimando alla pagina relativa.

Aggiungo che questa sera  pubblichero’ sull’App Store il primo (e spero ultimo) aggiornamento di iUptime. A parte piccole modifiche e migliorie ho aggiungo la possibilita’ di inviare l’uptime piu’ alto via mail.
Le informazioni inviate sono:

• versione del firmware montato dall’iPhone;
• nome del device;
• identificatore unico dell’iPhone (proprio su questo sara possibile identificare univocamente i vari iPhone in caso si inviino uptime diversi).

Tutti questi tempi andanno a formare una classifica (non ci sono premi, solo il gusto di sapere i tempi di uptime del nostro amato iPhone, un po’ come avviene su netcraft per i server con il piu’ alto runtime). Appena avro ricevuto’ i primi feedback segnalero’ il link alla classifica.

Gia’ che c’ero – dato che oltre a rendere disponibili le mie applicazioni, le utilizzo io stesso – ho aggiunto alcuni controlli nella flipview per mostrare l’utilizzo della memoria: come sappiamo, nonostante Apple abbia migliorato molto le cose con le ultime release del firmware), capita che le applicazioni vengano chiuse dal sistema operativo o subiscano un crash per la mancanza di memoria libera (che la mancanza di memoria dipenda da applicazioni in background o da memory leaks originati da applicazioni scritte con i piedi o parti delle librerie non del tutto perfette (NSXMLParser!!) non cambia il risultato).

Quindi visto che l‘iPhone e’ da considerare un device “always-on” capita che dopo alcuni giorni la memoria “persa” dai memory leaks, e recuperabile solo con un reboot del device, aumenti e dia problemi. Ho pensato fosse utile, in una applicazione che tiene d’occhio il tempo di funzionamento continuato, avere questo tipo di feature.

Alcune applicazioni permettono di terminare i processi in background (ad esempio Safari) per liberare memoria, ma e’ solo una misura palliativa; nel caso fosse di interesse potro’ aggiungerla in seguito, quindi fatevi sentire =)

Per quanto riguarda ALive sto finendo di testare le nuove features:

• sara’ possibile seguire una partita dai tabellini, ovvero quando ad intervalli regolari verranno scaricate le nuove informazioni il tabellino visualizzato sara’ aggiornato contestualmente;
• sara’ possibile avere un avviso acustico (un simpatico fischietto) in caso di goal.

Ovviamente il tutto e’ facoltativo e abilitabile attraverso le opzioni.

This evening am going to publish on App Store the first (and hopefully last) iUptime update. Apart from minor changes and improvements, I’d add the option to send highest uptimes rank via email.
Sent information:

• iPhone current firmware version;
• name of the device;
• iPhone unique identifier (it’s possible to uniquely identify the various mobiles if you send several uptime).

All these uptimes will be ranked in a league table (there are no prizes, justknow the taste of the uptimes, quite like netcraft‘s most high runtime servers list).  Asap some feedback will occour, will link to the list.

Also – as well as make available my applications, I’m using myself – I added some controls in flipview so to show memory status: as we all know, even though Apple has improved lotsa things coming with the latest firmware), happens that applications are forcerly closed by the operating system or undergo a crash at the lack of free memory (beside the lack of memory depends on applications in the background or memory leaks originated from applications badly written or parts of libraries not totally compliant (NSXMLParser!) does not change the result).

Juxtapose iPhone needs to be considered as an “always-on” device, and happens after a few days the “loss” from memory leaks,  recovered only with a reboot of the device, that would increase problems. I thought it was useful in such application that keeps an eye on the time of the operation continued, to have this type of feature.

Some applications allow you to kill background processes (eg Safari) to free up memory, but it’s only a state of the art measure; if you think it can be useful will add it laterly so drop a line =)

In the end: ALive is into test the new features:

• it’s possible to follow up a match via concerning boxes, when, at given times, all updated information will be downloaded;
• it’s possible to have a sound advice, a nice whistle-tweet if score.
